We are very lucky in Kamo (and the wider Whangarei area) to live so closely with the native wildlife and enjoy the natural environments they inhabit as part of our lifestyle. As a community organisation it is important to us to protect what we have. In the case of eradicating the pest population that endangers it, it has to be a collective effort from the community. Our role is to coordinate the effort in our local area, and energize and inspire the people who live here, to play a part. Even in populated areas of Kamo, we enjoy regularly seeing Tui, Kukupa (New Zealand pigeon), and even Ruru (Morepork) visiting backyards. It requires a small amount of effort from residents and can have a big impact, we think education and participation is the key to this. Conveying information to Kamo residents and organising pest control workshops for the community, will hopefully be a big step in the direction to becoming a pest free Kamo.
Together with (and presented by) Dai from Tiakina Whangarei (Northland regional council), KCi held the first workshop at Griffin hall for the community on the 18th of March to learn about pest control in the region and how to participate in the efforts with backyard trapping.
It was attended by 22 people, and traps were provided by Dai for attendees to take home. We are encouraging those who attended to stay in touch and report their progress and also to register their traps on Trap.nz
